Planning Ahead for Senior Living

Start looking for senior living communities well in advance of needing the care provided there. Start a “senior living” folder, notebook or binder to keep track of your notes, questions, photos, brochure, paperwork, etc. Keep a separate folder or section in your binder for each facility.

Consult with your doctor and other caregivers for their recommendations about what providers may be appropriate. Gerontologists, social workers and referral agencies may be able to help with your search. If the senior is a veteran, the Veteran’s Administration may have some resources you can use. Don’t hesitate to tap into all the resources that are available to you — you don’t have to struggle alone.

Make a list of the most important considerations. Do you want a community that’s located near family? What areas of daily life does the senior need most assistance with? Do you want a community with a particular religious affiliation?

Call the facilities that interest you. Go in for a visit and tour.
