It’s been a week now since my mom passed away, but I find it a great comfort to know that she was so well treated by you and your staff in the final years of her life. She was quite debilitated towards the end, but so many people on the staff went out of their way to ease her days and make her as comfortable as possible. I won’t mention any names for fear of leaving out someone who should receive my personal thanks, but I hope you will share this letter with them all, and make sure they know how grateful I am for all their assistance my mom received.

There are many establishments that provide housing and assistance to older people, and they vary in quality and accommodations. But the one thing that cannot be bought is a passion for caring. That comes from the heart, and even from the soul. My mom received that caring from all of you, and I will be eternally grateful for the effort you all made. You may be assured that you will never be forgotten, and assured as well that I will be pleased to recommend the Chateau on Capitol Avenue to anyone who ask me about assisted living facilities.

With kindest regards.

Although I tried to articulate most of these things when we met, I am writing to reiterate our deep appreciation [...]

Although I tried to articulate most of these things when we met, I am writing to reiterate our deep appreciation for the quality that you brought to the last months of my mother’s life. As difficult as those last months were — fighting a battle that we all knew would be soon lost — the circumstances were made immeasurably better by the extraordinary level of genuine and affectionate care provided by the entirety of the Chateau on Capitol Avenue’s staff. I say without exaggeration that there was not a single person with whom we had any interaction that was anything less than remarkable in the compassionate way that they performed their duties.

In the many hours that my wife, Ann, and I spent at the Chateau, we had ample opportunity to observe the caregivers (the “front-line troops,” if you will) interacting with my mother and administering to her quickly increasing needs. It wasn’t just that these members of the staff were unfailingly polite and attentive. It was more than this. It was obvious that they really cared; it was obvious that they were doing more than just their job. The strategies that they employed to keep my mother comfortable were thoughtful and creative and in no way the product of a “9 to 5″ mentality.

Perhaps the real proof is that none of this was lost on my mother, who, although uniformly polite herself, was not an easy “sell” in terms of her trust or affection, both of which she had for all of her caregivers. She also had great affection for all of her med-techs (notwithstanding her increasing lack of enthusiasm for the pill-taking). Nor should the wait-staff in the dining room go without mention, each of whom was very thoughtful and patient and each of whom took the trouble to remember that my mother did not like ice in her water, to remember how she took her tea, and so forth.

Lastly, I would like to specially mention and express our gratitude to Hayley and Monica, who did such a competent and masterful job in dealing with the medical circumstances and in taking on a huge portion of the associated administrative tasks that would have otherwise been added to our plate. In particular, Ann and I will be forever deeply thankful for their assistance in the ultimately successful efforts to keep my mother out of a skilled nursing facility (her worst fear) and to allow my mother to spend her last days in a “home” setting, surrounded by her favorite things.

In the days following my mother’s death, we were fortunate enough to run across most of the members of the staff and to express our personal gratitude, but I would appreciate it if you would reiterate with all of them the sincerity of that gratitude. Although my mother is gone, both Ann and I will take something very positive from the last months of her life — the notion that there may be more true kindness in the world than we had come to expect. You have really created something extraordinary in the staff that you have assembled at the Chateau on Capitol Avenue and we hope that it lasts for a long time.

Very truly yours.

Step 1. Evaluate your needs, desires and resources or those of the prospective senior resident.Needs encompass what is absolutely necessary for a senior’s life to continue in the best possible setting. If you are unsure about the level of care or type of housing you need, there are numerous assessment tools and questionnaires available. See where needs fall in the range between full independence and around-the-clock nursing care. Another factor is deciding when a move is necessary or desirable.

Desires are what we are naturally drawn to or what sound the most appealing for a specific situation. An important first consideration is where you want your needs met. You may want to stay in your current home and have a variety of homes services delivered there. Or you may choose to move to an assisted living community or skilled nursing facility. Do you want to stay near your current residence or close to the home of a family member? Do you want a community that mimics your current home? Would you prefer a facility operated by a particular religious or fraternal organization? Is a particular climate important?

Resources include the income, savings, investments, or sale of a residence that can be devoted to home care or a senior living community. Generally speaking, costs are almost always the responsibility of the individual, so you may want to consult an attorney or financial planner.

Step 2. Evaluate your housing and care options

This may be easier than you think because so much information is out there. (Check the Internet Resources page on our website.) Talk at length to admissions coordinators at the community or care option closest to our needs. Read the facility descriptions and check locations.

Step 3. Finally, and very importantly, visit your top candidates.

If possible, schedule a visit to the communities of your choice and then return later unannounced. After 5 p.m. and during mealtime will reveal important aspects of that community’s daily operation.

Twenty-five years ago as seniors aged they essentially had two ways to meet their long-term care needs:

1) stay in their own homes and do the best they could or,

2) go to a medically oriented nursing home.

Today a wide range of housing and services exist to help the elderly meet their diverse needs, from home health, to adult day care, to residential care. These options are often referred to as the “continuum of care”. But — until they need it — most people are unfamiliar with the gamut of programs and services available for seniors. The continuum of care can seem like a maze.

It is our hope to provide on this website a wealth of information so seniors can better understand how, when and what to access in the spectrum of long-term care. We also hope this material helps guide adult children and other loved ones who find themselves assisting seniors with this type of decision-making. Please browse our sites and get in touch for more information.

In 2001, my parents, Al and V. G. left the home that they had raised their family in and move to the Chateau at River’s Edge. They had a large duet apartment and never dreamed they would move to some place so wonderful. Daddy lived there for eight months and then passed away at age 86. The time at the Chateau was some of his best. He would tell anyone who would listen that it was the best place to live. He was proud to be there. Mom soon began to see that besides the love and support of her family, she had yours, too! She felt so close to many there and cherished your stories, songs or whatever you had to share. Thank you for all the family events you have. Mom loved to show off her family, and it was so wonderful that we all got to be at GG’s home. We would’ve liked to move Mom closer to where we lived but could find no place to compare to the Chateau. I will never forget your staff’s kindness, caring, compassion and commitment. Mom had a better and richer life because of you. — Janice W.
